So I’ve been getting bugged for a while to follow up on my offer to blog about the hat. THE hat. That’s right... THAT one. Whatsit all about? Why wear one? Does it symbolize anything? Am I a bad jew for not wearing one?

Firstly, who wears hats? For the most part, the hat belongs to the orthodox. The ultraorthodox to be specific. the yeshiva boys and the fathers of said yeshiva boys. This alone should be enough to convince most that the hat is unnecessary and something that has been forced on the right wing for reasons that they cannot comprehend.

Halachically, the reason one might want to have a hat around is for tefillah. You should have a double covering on your head when praying and so, the hat is convenient in that aspect at least. Of course, a baseball cap or a lined velvet kippa is just as effective, but a borsalino works well too.

The reason though, if you were to ask a yeshiva guy or a yeshiva-specific rabbi, is because it is a dress code. To wear a hat is to state that you are in the service of HaShem, seemingly implying that if you don’t wear a hat, you are not. It helps one stand out as part of the right wing community of orthodox Jewry.

Why is a dress code necessary? To answer that, we go back to the late 50's and early 60's.
Christian America, particularly with its large percentage of protestant faithful, is a dangerous place for Judaism. In times of glaring hatred and anti-Semitism, the two religions would never see eye-to-eye and assimilation was low. Christianity today holds no such outstanding grudges and has even renounced certain theological differences with Judaism such as "replacement theology," wherein Christians replaced the Jews in G-D's plan for the world. In times of such acceptance, liberal Jews can have a hard time differentiating their religion from that of liberal Protestant Christianity with its weltanschauung of good living and hard work. They no longer view themselves as distinct from their neighbors and choose not to identify themselves as different either.

As this assimilation occurred, a counter-assimilation movement took shape in the underground of Jewish activity. As culture was lost in tandem with this loss of Jewish identity, small groups or individuals performed "reculturation" where outrageous exaggeration or even brand new concepts of Judaism were practiced. Small technicalities became central tenets of the religion and mystical or existential ideology became the outward face of that particular sect. What inevitably happened was the confusion of "standard" Judaism with these private practices, those not authenticated by the Rabbis, leading to a further befuddling of what is or isn’t Jewish.
More recently, Kabbalah has been dummied down for celebrities and those who wish to attain spirituality overnight, and has lost all its meaning and purpose in the process. This has not stopped it, however, from becoming a major part of visible Jewish culture which in turn drives another nail into the coffin lid of American Judaic culture.

To deal with this spreading of "false Judaism," the different major branches of Jewish pluralism adopted different methods. Conservatism, the traditional middle-of-the-road sect, has done little to address the change in public opinion of the last 40 years save for making its positions on matters of Jewish law more flexible than Orthodoxy without breaking recognizable continuity with traditional understandings. The Conservative movement has stayed in the middle without picking a side, hoping blindly that people will return to them, despite the obvious trends.
The Reform movement since the early 60's, has taken a much more open-minded approach, attempting to attract those who have strayed, by allowing all who identify with Judaism to fall under the Reform umbrella of Judaism. This opening of the floodgates has done its own damage to Jewish culture by being non-discriminatory in what it envelopes. As privatized forms of Judaism are accepted, the definition of Judaism is forever in fluctuation. By accepting all believers as Jewish, the Reform movement has destroyed the old standards of belief and custom and has watered down the culture of Judaism by accepting all.

If the Reform movement has been accused of being too accepting, then the exact opposite can be said of the right-wing ultraOrthodox. In every instance where the Reform have chosen to be open-minded the RWUOrthodox have drawn their borders tighter, becoming more and more severe in their control over their schools, summer camps and other organizations. Where once there was moderate leniency, there is now absolutism in what is and is not acceptable according to Jewish law. In direct contrast to the consequences of the Reform’s actions, the raising of the RWUOrthodoxy’s ramparts around their culture has done its own harm, keeping out those who once would have belonged. The severity of RWUOrthodoxy, as a result of its insecurity in these modern times, has alienated many former believers and has even created hurt feelings and class "wars" in Jewish communities.

In the years since the beginning of this war RWUorthodoxy has transformed. Where once there was a legitimate branch of Judaism, the staunch rightness of the group has turned it into a paranoid bunch of old men with beards, frightened of the future, and so, returning to the past. Once there was open-mindedness about issues of gender, the workplace and individual minhagim. Now we face daily publications of chumras that have no basis in halacha. Instead of facing the modern world head-on, with faith in Gd as our backbone, we have decided to turn tail and flee, using strict adherence to halacha and the torah as an excuse. We have decided to lock ourselves in the bait medrash and abstractly study non-applicable gemaras while we remain ignorant of basic Nach and halacha. If we do not ask questions, we don’t need to come up with answers. Its unimportant if we only keep the Torah, but ignore the Avoda and Gemilas ChaSodim aspects of our religion. After all, heaven is just one big Beit Midrash so you’d better enjoy learning. Ahavas HaShem? Whats that? I have some Yiras HaShem though if thats what you meant.

The black fedora is an embodiment of this concept. No one is quite sure why they wear it or if it has any halachic basis. Why a fedora came to represent RWUorthodoxy is anyones guess. They do know, however,as they were taught, that if you do NOT wear it, you are not a good jew and will probably go to hell. It transcends being a part of the dress code. It is actually fully symbolic of everything RWUO has been doing for the last fifty or so years.

So why do I wear one? Makes my dad happy :)

While most of your post is correct, the hat has nothing to do with it.

Every respectible man up until the 70s wore a hat.

I am for making a virtual hat, I am still in the process of fine tuning it, but its being worked on :)

while you are right about men and hats until the JFK era, I must point out that that was merely a catalyst. That everyone used to wear a hat is practically inconsequential to why they still wear them today.

As for the virtual hat, Im a 7 5/8 or a 59 in European fittings.

without the black hat you would have no shidduch dates to gripe about b/c, nu, what kind of yeshiva bochur doesn't wear a black hat?
even jack abramoff wears a black hat. (b"h it didnt come off as a chillul hashem bc The NY Times interpreted it as gangster style- invoking the godfather rather than the corrupt jews)
abramoff is an extreme example of your point, someone who cloaked himself in religious garb and psuedo-practice while explicitly transgressing the torahs commandments. so, true, the black hat is a cover for many things that our wrong with the jewish world, but does that completely destroy the hats credibility? can it not just remain as a nice custom? im not necisarily a fan of the black hat, but it seems that there is nothing implicily wrong with it?
personally, i think most jewish boys should wear hats. they add a good 2-3 inches to the typical 5"8-er.

Thanks Prag. I know way too mny people, myself included, who share identical sympathies.

As for Jack Abramov, firstly, I direct you to an old post by SerAndEz (mazal tov again):

http://serandez.blogspot.com/2006/01/sickening.html

The hat was in fact used as a weapon against abramoff, even by the JEWISH PRESS! not to exclude other places Ive seen it but cannot recall anymore.

Additionally, Sara, the issue wasnt that people hide irreligiousness behind a defense of Black Hattitude... Its that, much like the black hat, most Orthodox people have no idea why they are Jewish, or what it means to them. They blinly follow their gedolim, in wave after wave of separationalistic chumras and defenfd them without knowing the merits or consequences. The hat is the dress-code for the "Idunno" jew who can frequently say the entire shas ba'al peh but not know that commentaries other than Rashi exist, and have things to say as well. The hat, like the seder ha'yeshivah, is shut up and do as your told. You dont need to understand your religion to be a good jew.

As for its intrinsic harmlesness... yes... but only if you discount its symbolism. It stands for being more than a felt fedora. Otherwise, the rabbis would probably have no qualms if a talmud were to daven in a Bowler hat, or a tophat even. They are both very classy hats as the fedora was, but they dont have the same implications.

Finally, as for the aesthetic value it lends torward vertically-challenged shidduch participants, thats a very superficial concept! Why must we focus whats on the outside of the head? Its whats underneath the hat that really matters; and whats underneath the hat, after a 3 hour shabbos davening is a mess of hat-hair that can never be truly tamed until the after-shabbos shower. Yet another reason, right Prag?

You make some intersting points.
There is something huge, that i belive you missed however. In depicting the Ultra-
Orthodoxworld as insular and uninviting to outsiders, you must also note the incredible Kiruv movement that is undoubtedly based in the ultra orthodox world. Thousands (this is no exaggeration) of people of all types backgrounds and colors make their way through ultra orthodox institions every month. Between Aish Hatorah, and the several other programs at the Western Wall alone (!) several hundred unaffiliated Jews are welcomed every week! Some for olny one class of just a pair of tefillin to try on... BUT! the reform world is doing nothing of the sort, nor are the conservatives. THe modern orthodox world does very little as well. (NCSY is a notable exception, but essentailly they are simply trying not to lose thier own kids- so while its kiruv, it is synagouge based and pulls only the memberships children in the overwhelming majority of instances.) I would even venture to say that in the ultra orthodox world, (take such extreme exmaples as Kiryas Yoel of Satmar, or Skver Town, ) an outsider is for more likely to be made to feel at home - invited for shabbos regardless of the ponytail, or kipah srugah - than that same chasid would be made to feel in a young israel.
I proudly identify with the people who will be in olam habbah, by putting on my black hat
Elchanan

p.s. As a somewhat technical note, it should be noted that nothing has changed in t he methods of yeshiva learnign since approximately the times ofthe vilna gaon. There has never been much focus on nach - and halacha is the outgrowth of talmud study. Rashi himself explains the Talmud as telling educators to aviod tecahing youngster too much nach, andthere is much written in torah sources supporting our methods. I would suggest, respectfully, that before making such indictful and rash satement, you truly research the torah literature of the last thousand years or so and the relevant talmudic passages (minu bneichem min hahaigayon says the gemara, which rahsi says means nach!!!) (the pri megadim in his intro tho shulchan aruch laments thast he was not taught much nach when he was under bar mitxvah, but says "waht can i do - i must learn talmud now and cannot go back and be so busy with nach. Mabye our elementary schools need a better nach program - but there is plenty to suggest that even if it is weak, it should not be the focus of our yeshiva cirriculum. R Hai Gaon in a tshuva says "The ikkar if all service of hasem is "limmud haShas"! (This is quoted on the title page of ther Bloom Shas Mahaduras Eretz Yisrael) This is a p.s to a blog comment, not the place for any more quotes.
Enjoying the blog, E.S

first i want to respond to Elchanan in defense of Xvi.
i know xvi used taht language in his text but i think what he meant (and if he didnt this will be my argument) that the ultra orthodox community focuses on the wrong chumras.
to be machmir and meticulous in the primary areas, such as loshon hara, bittul torah, etc. is warranted and welcomed, however, if one instead focuses on peripheral chumras they might lose sight of the primary areas. Chumras
are apt to become a burden and a nuisance, and may eventually tempt a person
to cast the yoke of much more than the chumra off his or her shoulders. This
is the danger inherent in chumros. So all Xvi is saying is focus on the essentials (first)and dont make teh secondary issues the primary ones.

Now my comment to Xvi:
"but ignore the Avoda and Gemilas ChaSodim aspects of our religion."

I storngly disagree with this statement. Although i dont side with the rest of your comment, the arguments you make can be heard. however, this statement is not only baseless but wrongfully attributed to the ultraorthodox. When i thing of chessed, teh first thing the pops into my head is Hatzolah- an organiztion operated primarily by teh ultraorthodox. After hatzoloh i think of bikur cholem or Rofeah Cholim- chassidim oriented chessed programs. ANd teh list doesnt stop there; it goes on and on. So although you may have some complaints about the ultra orthodox community, chessed should not be one of them.

Ok, sorry I took my time getting back here, but here are my weak and limited responses:

Firstly, as for the kiruv organizations, they are a little in the middle of the road...

Id firstly like to point out that kmat every rabbi I have ever met that has had an original, or at least different, thought in his head as to being mkabel ol malchus shomayim has been a kiruv rabbi. It almost seems as if the orthodox has invested ALL their thinkers into the kiruv movement. That aside though, I cant use kiruv as a counterexample to the orthodox insulation, as the kiruv program is basically orthodox recruitment. These programs are specifically designed to spew some truth (and sadly, a lot of crap) in order to convince people that orthodoxy is the only calling. It can be very effective, with its bible codes and thursday night chulent, at taking reform and irreligious/ignorant jews and showing them the Torah, but becomes shockingly ineffective when applied to the learned with questions or those of a more modern background.

Now, chas vsholom that I would say that we can personalize the Torah or accept only the parts that we like on ourselves, but a major part of being Jewish and more specifically, religious, is in our RELATIONSHIP with haShem. That is what tefillah, the mitzvos and all avodah is about. To become closer to hashem, to better serve and understand him. My allegation against the orthodox community (NOT the fully religious, NOT the shomrei torah umitzvot, but the insularly arranged orthodox community) is that they do not promote this. Although they are not fear-mongers, the perpetual threat of retribution for your sins is a sinister method that IS employed in yeshivas. Although humility is a noble attribute and needed from everyone to truly serve Gd, the constant mussar of the yeshiva system is still exceptionally self-serving torwards their closeminded needs. You are still trained to only ask questions on the gemara and halacha, but not on philosophy or epistomology. We are trained to think of ourselves as dumb and limited in our ability to understand the great minds of the chazal and the rishonim, so we should not ask questions or wonder from where our limitations arise. All my complaint is, is that we are not allowed to be jews any way other than in ways that they OK.

As for chumras?
How about banning the internet in Lakewood? What was that whole Indian hair shaitel garbage last year? Why cant R' Nosson Slifkin get a book published? All of these fairly recent "chumrafads" were designed NOT to deal with the ever-changing world, but to hide from it. The gedolim are closing their eyes, sticking their fingers in their ears and saying "nanana" to a modern world that they cannot acknowldge for fear of losing to it.

Thats why your krum if you wear jeans or dont don a black fedora. Thats why your an apikores if you believe in evolution or that the world is more than 5800 years old (despite the fact that neither of those scientific facts are really at odds with religious thinking). It dosent fall into the framework of what THEY consider religious and they dont know how to deal with it, so they put you in cheirim. Its just easier.

Xvi, you make some bold and, dare i say, veracious statements. It is the response of "anonymous", however, which sheds light on an entirely, yet related, problem. His/her response is not to merely attack what you are saying, but to attack your knowledge altogether, in an effort to somehow discredit your right to to opine whatsoever. This is a hackneyed and primitive tactic that i regularly notice when issues such as the ones you mentioned are broached. Ultimately, it only lends credence to the ideas you are espousing. Keep em coming!

To respond to Elchanan, and this is something that I don't agree is right, but I do want to point out that if you ask Reform and Conservative Jews whether they are making any kind of kiruv or outreach effort, they will tell you that that is exactly the point of conversion classes and support groups for intermarried couples. They believe that by bringing in outsiders they are doing as much for Judaism as programs like Aish Hatorah. And they do result in large numbers of converted Jews, albeit non-halachic and without much knowledge of what they are converting to. Again, I don't agree with what they do, but you can't say that they are not attempting their own form of kiruv.

to SHOSHANA!
i must clarify - what i am suggesting is not that they are not attempting to boost their memebership numbers. This sort of activity can hardly be considered that kind. (though anyone who believes in his or her insitution should seek to help it grow) What i mean is, they are not particularly caring about other Jews. They do not seek to embrace the Orthodox, or Hasidic. They do not feel the pain of the Jews in Gush Katif in any meaningful way (i speak not of individuals, we cannot judge, but on a communal level, they offer no noticable financial or moral support)Their efforts to boost their membership by admitting anyone who knows how to spell God into the covenant of Abraham is an outrage. And they do not seek to embrace other Jews in any signifigant way. therefore, not only do i not condone thier effoorts, i can hardly respect them for what they are.

Elchanan -

I agree with much of your analysis, and personally do believe that the Reform and Conservative platform of regularly and deliberately putting more and more distance between themselves and Orthodox Jews does an incredible disservice to Judaism as a whole. While in the process of becoming frum, I was commonly the target of attempts to save me from going to "the other side," which is the problem I see in their perspective - they refuse to view Orthodox Judaism as a part of a bigger whole. Rather, they tend to view it as a threat as dangerous as Jews for Jesus, which is ridiculous.

That's just a Kabbalistic custom, not necessary in Halakha. I've seen many Yekkes take off their yarmulka when they put on their hat (and vice versa), only one head covering at a time. On the other hand, i've seen a "Neo-Hhasidic" Modern Orthodox guy put on a big colorful Bukharian-style yarmulka over his regular one, in order to have the double head covering.

your going to hell!! and so am i for saying (and feeling) that you deserve Hell (as you probably have been unfairly treated by the Ultra-o,and deserve some deference)!! One must be positive towards everyone, and be Dan lekaf Zechus, this includes (and even requires more deference to)even the ultra-orthodox. It is hard, but heres a pointer that i've been using. in the Iggeres Haramban we are told to look at everyone as if they are tzaddikim, I.e. if they do wrong, it's not really their fault because (especially in these times of Golus) there are extenuating circumstances which caused him to do such that we just aren't entering into our Rasha-Dubbing calculation.
Why must we look down and question people who have spent their whole lives in the pursuit of truth and true Chessed? If the Gedolim who never saw Pornography and learned to simply trust in G-d and study His torah instead of wasting life like we do (especially on the Internet) decided that the Internet is essentially an easy entrance into a world of evil and self-corruption (see here), which cannot be blocked (I tried every filter and blocker, but I can always et to porn etc!!) which should not be available in a Jewish home where people are fighting their Yetser Hara's harder than ever before already (with the world's embrace of obvious and outward sexuality), You dare to caim they are closeminded. I know you'll claim there is good stuff to, but last time I checked Jews don't believe in fulfilling commandments at the expense of breaking others. mitzvah haboh beaveirah acccording to many is only if done at the same moment (see Minchas Chinuch on Procreation in bereshis), but the central reasoning and idea remains, combined with two important distinguishing factors:
1) here the aveirah's are possibly so harmful as to be considered at a level similar to Carais (see Zohar, many others on wasting of semen, as well as Sharrei teshuvah on the repetition of aveiros elevating it's illegality, btw R' Yonah was another Rishon other than Rashi; I hated that only Learning gemara Rashi comment, If we could really get every Rashi, then i'd love to learn everybody, but many have said Rashi is the Godol of the Rishonim (see Vilna Gaon's order of Mesorah, Chazon Ish, CHida in the name of the "Gedolim", Maharitz Chiyus, Mareeh Cohen and many others) and learning Gemara while understanding Rashi's reading is at least some basis before just gong thru what different people say on what was said essentially thru Gemara Rashi).
2) the possible good ca all be attained without even having internet!! WHy look up dvar Torah's online, etc, can get better quality (not tainted) Torah offline, and at the expense of putting yourself in an extreme Nisayon that people just don't pass (if your alone it ppears similar to the Gemara's analogy of giving a sack of coins to a teenager in front of a Whorehouse and walking away). Would you give unfettered access to your kids?? Why should you allow yourself to do aveiros (and strengthen bad traits (which will filter into your kids G-d Forbid).
So any internet that allows such easy access to evil is Per Se bad, without any redeeming factors mattering to the equation, so Lakewood made a good move, hoping to protect the future from what has happened to many people (me included) today. ANd please don't give any free choice or im a hypocrite arguments which have no bearing on the essential point, Internet is currently evil.

Indian Hair sheitels - do you believe in the sacrifices of the temple? the general laws of objects used for pagan rituals? have you studied this? the Gedolei Yisroel have, and it is clear that if hair was used in pagan rituals it surely shouldn't be worn on a jewish women's head, you may be a pragmatic guy, but the Torah clearly looks at inherent tumaah and Holiness of objects all the time and requires us to stay away from tumaah, even irrespective of reasoning. We had to kill every kid and woman from the Seven Nations of Amalek, and burn their cities and houses to the ground, because otherwise their Tumaah Lifestyle would mess us up even if we lived in separate cities (Rambam Sefer Hamitzvos/the 14)!!

SlifkinGate - You of course apply the Midah of looking at the good of all people, just in a misguided context. first off, this ban has gotten him more sales, and publishing is only a problem with the ultra-ortho pubs. allegedly R' Slifkin did say that the Flood was allegory, and to deny the truth of any of the Torah's "Stories" is going against all of orthodoxy from the beginning. I went to Club Med (his Alma Mater) and the Rosh yeshiva wasn't a big fan of his (though this could be due to the bad press), and i went on a tour of the Biblical zoo and found he was a sweet normal guy, but he didn't strike me as someone who learns all day and night like all the gedolim who have warned us to steer clear of his "modern" jewish philosophy (including R' Elyashiv and R' Matisyahu solomon who signed the ban). And though this modern view unfortunately appears to be the predominant one in "modern" america (one which i grapple with all the time, and used to believe was kosher), where we want to integrate all the modern beliefs into Judaism, i.e. reconciling science and Torah rather thn realizing that scientific beliefs change radically every ten years, and to try to fit judaism with it is stupid and shows a lack of true belief in pure Judaism and G-d (i.e. why must judaism have basis in science, which is essentially its own religion, and there will anyways always be incosistencies - afterlife, Nissim etc.).

So the Gedolim may have a fear of losing to the modern world - you better believe it, just like they had a fear of paganism in its time, and banned people left and right who merely dabbled in it. i any event, it is unfair to believe that these Gedolim who clearly are following more Torah precepts than us (other than allegedly "slandering" this Rabbi, they are angels, studying the Torah all day and being kind to everyone, which you must grant as being the ultimate jewish lifestyle) are really just jerks trying to mess everyone up, and if we don't believe in our leaders - a requirement of the Torah (and Judaism) itself, are we good jews??
I think the smart move is to trust these great men and do exactly what they say, for we have less wisdom, and are like blind men in this World of lies, and they got the eyes.

Oh yeah, and i have met several gedolim while in jeans etc. and they treated me with the same respect as any other guy. Any Godol will tell you The black hat is not the constant uniform for everyone. There is the Kabbalistic idea to wear a double covering for davening, and the gemara suggests having a special adornment or clothing set aside for prayer, but as a constant the Black Hat is only identification for a talmud chocham etc., and if your in Yeshiva you should dress the role, as a somewhat dignified person (as even today dignified people in the world where hats- see Biggy smalls etc.) wheres a hat, and one must not look like a loser when he is a prince of this world; but a normal guy should usually just where normal not so nice and not so cheap clothes (Mishnah Berurah); I ain't a Talmudic Scholar so I wear normal guy clothes and a hat and jacket for Prayer, and I have been told that's correct.
Hope you see the light someday,
kiruvist

A couple of coments about things said on the thread so far.
1) Re Chumrot: I have a cousin who won't eat prepared foods in my house, or any house where people don't hold by cholov yisroel, pat yisrael, and yoshon. His reasoning is that if you don't hold by those chumrot, he can't trust that you take kashrut 'seriously enough'. The traditional standard I was taught wasthat if someone is shomer shabbat one is supposed to presume they are shomer kashrut as well in the absence of any evidence to the contrary.

2) Non-Os hate the O. Having been raised C, become almost completely non-Observant, attended an R Rabbi's chumash study class for a couple of year, and now being traditionally observant/orthopractic, I can assure you that there are people in every movement who hate people in all the other movement. I've walked out of a dvar torah on the topic "Zimri: The first Reform Jew". The statement "They are Jews, but the religion they practice is not Judiasm" is a commonplace in O circles. Read Cross Currents for further examples of O disdain for non-Orthodox.
